A man died Sunday night in a fire at a Bangor homeless encampment.
The fire broke out inside a tent at the encampment, known locally as Camp Hope and Tent City, off Cleveland Street, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
A man who was staying in the tent was found dead at the scene, Moss said Monday morning.
His body was taken to the Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where an autopsy will be performed and he will be positively identified.
The fire marshal’s office is working with the Bangor police and fire departments to uncover the cause and origin of the fire.
No additional information was immediately available.
The fire death comes as the city of Bangor plans to shutter the encampment, which ballooned during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, more than 70 people call the encampment home. It’s unclear what will happen to the people living there, but outreach workers hope to connect them to resources and housing before the camp closes on Dec. 31.
